Each year millions of UK holidaymakers head to Greece to enjoy the rich culture and history, incredible food, and stunning scenery. But there is one tiny island that goes unvisited by many Brits. The breathtaking island of Lipsi is finally getting some of the recognition it deserves as an unmatched holiday destination after coming in second on Far Away Travel Blog’s top 10 authentic exotic holiday destination list for 2025, but many people have no idea it even exists.
If you are looking to get off the beaten path, then Lipsi is well worth a visit, with the Aegean Sea meeting pristine and unspoiled beaches on the island. Whilst tourists are encouraged to book a holiday there – the local authorities are dedicated to sustainable tourism “that has seen the community embrace water conservation and marine protection measures, ensuring that its natural beauty remains unspoiled for future generations,” per ekathimerini.com.
History lovers will be satisfied with a trip to Lipsi, which is home to the ancient Church of the Panagia tou Harou – dating back to the 7th century AD the church features an incredible icon of the Virgin Mary cradling the crucified Christ, and each year on August 23 an island-wide procession of the icon takes place, a celebration that is said to include singing and dancing well into the night.
The stunning landscapes of Lipsi are best taken in from Monodendri “a rugged promontory offering sweeping views and a solitary tree standing resilient against the elements – a striking testament to nature’s enduring spirit”. The beaches will offer you an unmatched opportunity to relax and unwind away from it all, with one travel blogger noting even when she visited in June, generally a busy time of year to embark on a trip that “even during this prime time of the year, we often found ourselves on pristine beaches with barely another soul in sight. It was as if we had discovered our private slice of paradise.”
There are a lot of ways you can take Lipsi in fully, from your choice of daily boat cruises to a horseback tour all the way to renting your own car or scooter to get around – and you will likely want to visit as many of the incredible beaches as possible.
Shopping addicts will be pleased with the picturesque offerings and Instagram-worthy gifts, and a family-run winery located on a hillside overlooking the vineyards is well worth a visit.
